The mid-January commitment of Tyrese Fryfogle appeared to open the floodgates for offensive prospects to pledge their allegiance to the “2017 Hoosier Army”. In the days between Fryfogle’s commitment and National Signing Day, IU added a number of skilled athletes that boosts the level of speed and athleticism on the Hoosiers roster. The next man to commit after Fryfogle was Plant High School’s De’Angelo “Whop” Philyor. The 6’0” do-it-all athlete is the high school teammate of fellow IU commit Thomas Allen and he chose Indiana over offers from multiple high majors including Arizona, Iowa State, Louisville, Syracuse, South Florida, Virginia Tech and more.
Philyor took his official visit to Bloomington in mid-January and he was impressed with the family atmosphere surrounding Tom Allen’s program. The best word to describe “Whop” is probably “playmaker”. As a senior, he caught 91 passes for 1,282 yards and 18 touchdowns and ran for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 38 tackles and 20 passes defended. Philyor has elite-level sub-4.4 speed and he has the kind of explosive “game breaking” ability the IU offense sorely lacked in 2016. He is expected to play wide receiver for the Hoosiers and it’s very possible his tremendous speed gets him on the field during the 2017 season.
