The secondary has long been a trouble spot for the IU football program. One of the players IU’s coaches and fans are hoping can help turn that weakness into a strength is defensive back A’Shon Riggins. The 6’0”, 165-pound 3-star recruit hails from Hamilton, OH and played at the same high school that produced current Hoosier linebacker Marcus Oliver. Riggins chose IU over offers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Cincinnati, Iowa, Nebraska and others.
When he committed in June, he told Hoosier Huddle that Marcus Oliver had sold him on the coaching staff, “Coach Shelby is really energetic, but he will get into you when it’s necessary,” said Riggins. “But it comes from the heart because he just wants you to be your best.”
According to 247Sports, Riggins is the 55th best player in Ohio and is the 107th best cornerback prospect in the country. At Hamilton High School, he saw action at both quarterback and defensive back. ESPN’s scouting report says that he has “good speed with excellent quickness and burst and above average athleticism.” They believe his athleticism, speed, quick reactions and instincts make him a solid defensive back prospect and a potential Special Teams contributor.
