Hoosier Huddle is gearing up for the spring with individual position group previews. Today, we examine two more parts of IU’s talented secondary: safeties and rovers. The Hoosiers lost quite a bit to graduation after last season, mainly the rock-steady Terry Jones and Shawn Asbury. Who says you can’t go home? The Indiana Hoosiers were in desperate need of a quality safety and a familiar face fell into their lap to fill the hole as former Hoosier Louis Moore signed with Curt Cignetti’s squad for the 2025 season. Moore left IU after a very strong 2023 campaign and headed to Ole Miss to play for Lane Kiffin. An injury limited him to just ten partial games but he still was a key member of the Rebels’ secondary.

The “Husky” position is not unique to Indiana’s football program but it is a type of player that not every defense plays. The “Husky” is a hybrid role that really redefines the traditional nickel cornerback position. The ideal Husky needs to be part safety, part cornerback and part linebacker and finding a player with the right physical skillset and mental makeup is not easy. The Hoosiers lost Bryant Fitzgerald, a player with a ton of game experience and some time spent playing Husky, but got terrific news with the return of Noah Pierre. Heading into spring football, Noah Pierre is the only sure thing on the roster for this important position.

The Hoosier Huddle position preview continues with the defensive backs room. The defensive backs are one of the most experienced rooms for Tom Allen’s Hoosiers. With Tiawan Mullen, Noah Pierre, Jaylin Williams and others returning to the Hoosiers, the safety net of the defense will look to be one of the strongest position groups for the Hoosiers. Mullen was hurt for most of last season following a great 2020 campaign.
